On Shabbat the Halacha forbids Jews to squeeze. Because of that normal sponges can not be used on Shabbat.
These special Shabbat sponges allow you to clean your dishes on Shabbat without violating the Melachot. The sponges are filled with a metal material, which according to Halacha can not be squeezed.
